Heat Pumps with Optiheat

Ground Source Heat Pumps in Devon

A ground source heat pump harnesses the heat from under the ground by pumping water through a looped pipe buried under the ground. The heat of the ground increases the temperature of the fluid within the pipe which is pumped into the heat pump. The heat pump increases the temperature and the hot water is then used to provide heating and hot water. Ground source heat pumps are made up from a network of underground pipes and a heat pump which is situated at ground level.

The ground loop may be fitted horizontally or vertically. Horizontal systems are laid in a trench over a wide surface area; a vertical system has the pipes buried in a borehole.

A mixture of water and anti freeze is pumped around the loop which absorbs the naturally occurring heat from the ground. The pump consists of a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator which takes the heat from the water mixture and transfers it to the heating system; it also increases the heat in the ground itself. The heat can then be used in radiators, under floor heating and hot water supply.

You do need electricity to power the pump but it is still an economical way of heating a building. Ground source heat pumps are eco friendly in the way that they use less co2 than other heating systems. Lower energy tariffs can be used to power the pump and some providers may offer special rates for the pumps.

The Energy Saving Trust says that you could make savings of £180 per year by replacing oil fired heating and up to £480 by replacing other electric heating.

Ground source heat pumps lowers your carbon foot print considerably as it uses a renewable natural form of heat.

As the heat pump needs a supplementary form of power (usually electricity) there will still be some carbon emissions but these are greatly reduced compared to other forms of heating. Consider a ground source heat pump for your home in Devon or Cornwall for your renewable heating solution.

Air Source Heat Pump for Devon Homes

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your Devon home.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally so your carbon emissions will be greatly reduced.
